Past Peace Weeks

"If one can rise to the challenge of enduring the most terrible afflictions and situations, maintaining the faith that life has meaning, one can transform personal tragedy into a triumph for humanity." Daisaku Ikeda, Soka Gakkai International

Peace Week at UC Irvine is a student led initiative to build a more compassionate and understanding community by expanding our knowledge about peacebuilding and nonviolent practices in diverse perspectives, whether it be through the lens of an academic or an activist. We hope you will join us for the next annual Peace Week at UCI!

Students for Global Peacebuilding wish to thank the following organizations for launching the 4th Annual Peace & Justice Week 2016:

UCI Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation

Center for Citizen Peacebuilding

Dalal Lama Fellows

Minor in Civic and Community Engagement, International Studies

All events are FREE and open to the public.

About Peace Week

Peace Week began as a goal of the student club, Students for Global Peacebuilding (SGP), to bring peace awareness to the campus and to inspire individuals to work toward a better today. Peace Week is an opportunity to learn about the pragmatic and systems-changing tactics of peacebuilding and nonviolence from leading experts in the field. In Spring 2013, as a result of our proposal for Peace Week at UCI, two of SGP's club leaders, Blanca Castro and Elizabeth Koppe, received the UCI Dalai Lama Scholarship and substantial project support from the Dalai Lama Fellows. The project grant, the Office of Student Affairs and the Center for Citizen Peacebuilding's assistance, and yearlong ethical leadership training have been an invaluable contribution to establish Peace Week. We are so grateful for all of the support. Click on the following links for more info on the UCI XIV Dalai Lama Scholarship and Dalai Lama Fellows.

Arts for Peace

Arts for Peace is an event that happens during Peace Week where peace is promoted through creative expression. SGP works with local performers to showcase dance and music performances, spoken word pieces, and art on display - all on the themes of peace.

Call for Artists:
Promote peace through creative expression during UCI's Arts for Peace event! If you paint, act, sing, write poetry, or play music, here is a chance to present your talent and inspire others through the theme of peace! You can participate as a group or an individual.
Please contact Kay Nguyen by email, kayn5@uci.edu, to sign up, or for any questions!

Goals of Peace Week:

  • Encourage community connectedness at UCI
  • Gain conflict resolution skills
  • Examine how peacebuilding programs have made an impact
  • Explore career options in peacebuilding
  • See how art can promote peace
  • Have fun!

Thank you to the Center for Citizen Peacebuilding, International Studies Program, UCI Student Affairs, and the Dalai Lama Scholars for all of the support and making the vision of the Students for Global Peacebuilding possible.
